Those excited shrieks, having long gone, making way for whispers and mature talks, have made us  stand on the podium of adulthood in a race to edge out everyone. The whole journey of life till date can be summed up in the aforesaid statement. Now, when childhood is just a shadow of its past, when our generation has given way to the next, one thing that everyone rues is those childhood games that occupied most of our time then. Those games which never made it to the Olympics but made a champion out of each one of us. When the present generation is glued to the gadget, engrossed to the virtual world, the childhood games which were so near to our heart are almost extinct. Here is list of some of those erstwhile very popular games which would surely force you to peruse through childhood memories.

1.       Pitto

Known by different names in different states like lagori, satoliya etc, Pittu is beyond doubt one of the most sought after games of those days. Played by two opposite teams taking aim at the stack of stones one by one, this game in an adrenaline rush and of-course that red circle which the ball leaves on your body is hard to forget.

2.       Chain Chain

Unofficial national games of school days, this was top pick for recess games. Finish your tiffin in a gulp and line up for playing , who wouldn’t have done that ?

3.        Lock and key :

Another recess/lunch break time game famous during school days worth remembering.

4.        Gilli Danda

Known as Tipcat in English, this game is spread beyond Indian borders to countries like Turkey and Cuba. Believed to have originated thousands of years ago, it has been an inseparable part of rural India.

5.       Gully cricket

In a cricket frenzy country like India its not surprising to find people playing cricket wherever possible. Lanes, by-lanes, courtyards nothing have been left out. What is amazing is the way the Gully Cricket has evolved, with its own rules e.g. “ One Drop One Hand Out”.

6.        Kancha

Perhaps an Indian version of Billiards, Kancha or Goli  is another famous rural sport played with marbles. The game is all about aiming the marbles in the circle with your marbles and the one doing it gets all the marbles in the circle and is thus the winner.

7.        Lattu

Called Pampabaram, Bambaram or Lattu, this game is another favourite Indian sport which has made its way to other countries of the Indian Subcontinent. Initially wooden tops ruled the roost whereas now even plastic Lattus are available in the market.

8.        Patang

There wouldn’t be anyone in India untouched by the craze of flying kite and more by the craze of snatching the ones falling from the sky. Immortalised even by Bollywood, this stil remains one of the most eye catching game in India.

9.       Bahuchori
Perhaps one of the commonest game of Odisha, the game is also played in various other parts of the country. The game is basically about dropping the groom in the opposite square and then bringing her back safely.


10.    Chupa chuppi
The all famous hide seek is better known as Lukka Chuppi/chupa chuppi is a game that starts at home and then fans out with friends and neighbours.

11. Statue

Also known as Freeze, this game has no doubt been a part of all school days, perhaps forming the very basic of fun days. Imagine getting caught at the most awkward moment and the time freezes. Well, this is  exactly what happened during those days.
