Varkala: The cliffed beach
Surrounded by sea on both sides, South India is blessed with some really breath taking beaches. Be it shallow beaches of Goa or the longest Indian beach of Marina, all of them draw huge crowds for some reason or the other. With that said, what stands out is the Varkala Beach and something uniquely associated with it. It has a guardian looking over it, if you would like to call a Cliff by that moniker. And thats not it, it has a hippie culture to boast of. Not very long ago, this beach was oblivious to most wandering eyes though it was famous as a religious place.
Not very far off from the capital city of Trivandrum, the beach stands well connected and draws people for all the right reasons. While sun bathing and shallow sea swimming is common as in other beaches, staying in many resorts overlooking the sea is a different experience altogether. Dotted with shacks, the cliff offers explicit cuisines behind the roaring sea.
A Spiritual Getaway:
Well thats not all, in addition to the beach, Varkala is famous for many other things. It would perhaps be right to say that its more of a spiritual retreat than an tourist spot. Papanasham beach is thronged by thousand every year for annual Bali Tharpanam. In addition to that, temples like Sivagiri Mutt, Janardhana Swamy Temple is most often buzzing with devotees.

A Soothing Experience :
Varkala is also known for an experience of high and low adrenaline. High when you opt for water sports like Parasailing and Low when you opt for Yoga and Massage.
Just a few Kilometers from Varkala are some lesser known and hence pristine beaches like Kappil beach and Ponnumuruthu Island.
Some Offbeat Experiences :
When in Varkala dont miss out on the mouth watering spicy delicacies of the Toddy Shops nearby, though most of them dont sell Toddy these days.
PC : GoogleOn a whole Varkala Beach without any doubt is one of the most refreshing essay in any beach lovers diary but what aches a loving heart is that the pristine beach faces grave danger of sea erosion. As the entire world coils up to the fight against climate change, this gem of a place also calls for special attention.
