PC : Google Situated at a distance of 350 KM for Chennai, Thanjavur has history engraved almost everywhere. The air, the roads and the buildings over there have stories to narrate and yet with so much happening in the past, the city has much to offer for any globetrotter. Once a capital of renowned  dynasties, the city witnessed many battles being fought and numerous dreams turning to dust. The place bears remembrance of many dynasties by the means of architectures they created. The modern day moniker of being a rice bowl also makes one peep back into history for its origin. Such was the wisdom of the rulers then that they invested in dams and worked extensively in improving irrigation. The cr...

Kozhikode... a beautiful place which turned wheels of history

Image
When a  ship that sailed with a  Portuguese man on board, seemingly aimless but determined to script history landed on the shore, history waited for him with open arms. The man in discussion is Vasco Da Gama and the place he landed was Kozhikode also known as Calicut. The first man to discover a sea route to India around Cape of Good Hope, Vasco Da Gama was the man who flung open the gates of imperialism in true sense. Waves of ships came and they conquered and ruled for centuries. Witnessing all this was the city of Calicut, thus inscribing itself in the annals of history.  History and past apart, Kozhikode is particularly worth a place to be. Beautiful as it is, Kozhikode is also a treat for culinary freaks. Flanked by sea...

Mysuru Palace . PC : Google Kings, kingdoms and information technology- seems a misfit, isnt it. Well, as a first thought, it does feel like a perfect mismatch and eons apart. It seems true only till you get a chance to visit Mysuru and get to know Bengaluru up close and personal. If there is a heart of Indian soft power, it is Bengaluru without any doubt. Just three hours away from the binary city, is the city of Palaces and royal fables of Mysuru. Suddenly, what seemed ages apart ...

Vasai fort.... history next to the glitz of Mumbai

Image
Bollywood, glitz and glamour, is perhaps how Mumbai is better known as. And for those who dare to dream, dream city is what it's better called. While the entire country flocks the mega city to realise a dream or the other, one place stands out for an unexpected experience. Vasai or Bassein, is approximately 60 Km from the heart of the city and ticks all boxes to be called outskirts of Mumbai. The best way to reach the fort is from the nearest railway station :Naigoan.   The  change in surrounding is too stark to go unnoticed. High rises give way to wetlands and grasslands which look lush green  during the rainy season. Also known for supplying vegetables and fruits to  the city, Vasai has lot more to offer than is visible in plain sight.  Once a place teeming with power during the Portuguese rule, Vasai now stands tall to tell the tale of bygone days. After Goa , Vasai is said to be the most important place of Portuguese rule in India. And the tryst with hi...

An Off season Kashmir Trip

Image
Well !! They say its heaven on the earth. Paradise, a cogent moniker that Kashmir earned with ease, is an exaggeration by no means. But that doesnot come without a rider- " Go there when it is best to do so ". On the northernmost horn of India, Kashmir stands renowned for its pristine valleys and milky rivers. For a tourist who goes there at the peak of happenings, it is without doubt a treat for the eyes. Here is a account of what can be expected in Kashmir when you reach there with not too much of tourists folks around. Generally, the peak season lasts from April to July. April being the month when the famous Tulip gardens bloom at its best. After the  tourism sun, if there is any such thing, sets in July, the valley sees a lean period of travelers. The silver lining is almost everything becomes half as costly as ever. The first thing you may have to content with is the fact that there would not be any Snow anywhere in the valley except for the unreachable heights of the Hi...

Varkala: The cliffed beach

Image
Surrounded by sea on both sides, South India is blessed with some really breath taking beaches. Be it shallow beaches of Goa or the longest Indian  beach of Marina, all of them draw huge crowds for some reason or the other. With that said, what stands out is the Varkala Beach and something uniquely associated with it. It has a guardian looking over it, if you would like to call a Cliff by that moniker. And thats not it, it has a hippie culture to boast of. Not very long ago, this beach was oblivious to most wandering eyes though it was famous as a religious place.  Not very far off from the capital city of Trivandrum, the beach stands well connected and draws people for all the right reasons. While sun bathing and shallow sea swimming is common as in other beaches, staying in many resorts overlooking the sea is a different experience altogether. Dotted with shacks, the cliff offers explicit cuisines behind the roaring sea. A Spiritual Getaway:  Well thats not all, in addi...
