Parambikulam- A day in the wild

Image
To see tigers and deers in the zoo and enclosure has become so common that it has almost lost its sheen. After all, a wild animal in captivity is hardly a wild animal. In order to get a first hand experience of what it would be to be in the wild, I had been wondering of being at place least tampered by man. That's when it dawned to me that we have hardly left such a place and the places still left are so because it's difficult to be there. Anyhow, I finally narrowed down to Parambikulam for a one trip. Famous as a tiger reserve, Parambikulam was almost a complete fit into my wishlist. The nearest known town to Parambikulam is Pollachi and hence the first pull over. Being a reserve forest, Parambikulam is not so well connected with the town and hence booking a vehicle would be the best idea. Given the fact that it's largely untouched, local contacts help in getting permit and arranging forest rides. The change in climate is evident even before the reserve forest starts. H...

Why you should not be at ECR when it rains

The road that connects Chennai with Pondicherry is otherwise known as East coast Road acronymed as ECR. Running parallel to the Bay of Bengal, the road winds through various landmarks like Mahabalipuram and Muttukadu. Generally a hot and humid place, Chennai changes colours when the retreating monsoon knocks at its door with the change being most noticable near the ECR . Calm and soothing sea burst into activity with high waves buzzing at the beaches. With rains lashing and the hitherto parched soil sending out the aroma of being wet for the first time in ages, the aura is all enchanting . So stay indoors lest you may fall in love with life. Make sure you lock yourself out of the reach of all those birds which touch down at the Muttkadu lake where the sea embraces the water body, lest the bird watcher ...

Trek to Thekkady

Image
Perched along the Kerala- Tamil Nadu border, Thekkady credits itself of being as close to nature as possible along with being the harbinger of culture. A nights journey from Chennai, this place is obvious to make to the to do list of enthusiasts and tourists alike. The real essence of the trip starts once you reach Cumbum. Well connected with Kumily, Cumbum is the best place to have breakfast and to recrank yourself with a cup of steaming coffee. The best of travelling is brought out by the ability to blend with the local populace and to get the taste of local culture. And what would be better than hopping into one of the state run buses bustling with activity. And then began the journey on roads winding around paddy and sugarcane fields dotted with few thatched roofed villages. Early morning breeze with soothing old melodies on the public bus along with joy of having saved money was more than enough to make me forget that I have been travelling for last 12 hours. With images see...
